Silent Giant by LordDoomhammer Silent Giant by LordDoomhammer
A location I created quite some time ago but didn't show as of yet. The big station is based upon the O'Neill Cylinder.
And that thing as frigging huge, I'm not sure if it's visible in this picture but believe me, it's simple gigantic in scale^^

As always modeled in SketchUp, rendered in Kerkythea, with post-production and textures being made in PS.

Hope you like it! :)

So a station with artificial gravity similiar to Babylon 5? Cool!

You have real talent and make amazing space arts. Love your work!

Nice depiction of a realistic station. Too often space stations are depicted in a terrestrial alignment (there is one down)..so boring! :]

I actually did a depiction of a double chambered O'Neill a little while back, so I had to do a lot of research for inspiration. I'm surprised I didn't stumble on this one.

Thank you very much! Maybe it just came too late. Will make some more in the future :)
You have some very nice designs btw! I am a fan of Homeworld as well ;)

I saw a documentary with one of these in it, it was called "Evacuate Earth" i think by the discovery channel, very interesting in what technology they put into it

I think the subject matter very interesting, but I don't think we'll see one of these for real in our lifetime :)

Maybe it doesn't look as big as it is... but it still looks big. Must have taken forever to render.

Glad to hear! But it took about 7min I think at a resolution of 6000x, so not very long ;)

Yes, I know from past reading that an O'Neill Cylinder would be huge, but this image doesn't make it obvious how large it is.

I think one way to make it clear would be to force a visual comparison with something that is much smaller but is also large compared to a human being.  Perhaps a series of space ships like the one in the foreground here, but all in a row approaching a port on the cylinder.  Since the cylinder is rotating, I guess the port would have to be in the center of one end of the cylinder. It would have to be an end that is illuminated by sunlight.    The spaceships would have to be between the viewer and the cylinder to make it clear that the ships are looking larger than they would appear if immediately beside the cylinder.

You might use the same trick again in the same image to show how small a human being is, compared to the spaceships.   That is, show a collection of space-suited men between the viewer and the ship.  The most distant man would be nearly invisible beside the ship, just as the most distant ship would be nearly invisible beside the cylinder.

You're absolutely correct and thank you for the suggestions! I already had similar ideas, but wanted to make them into some small animations. Just gotta find the time to make them^^

And something else that would definitively help would be dust - on earth size is (other than by direct comparison) often obvious due to an object changing color and saturation depending on the distance, which isn't the case in space. That being said, I'm always up for a challenge :)

I love it. I have always enjoyed the concept of cylindrical space settlements, and this is a beautiful rendition. Would you consider adding a download version at a larger size? I would love to see more of the detail, and even have this as a wallpaper.
